Wellness is more than your BMI and blood pressure. Real wellness, or wellness for your whole self, is as much about your job, family, your bank account as it is about your body.
NBC News Digital is seeking an editor that understands this mix, someone who can drive our coverage of Wellness – not just fitness fads or the latest medical study, but also personal finance, family, career. This Editor is responsible for delivering impactful, engaging, discussible and shareable content for a newly-constituted section on NBCNews.com. This person will “own” the section, and as such will be responsible for shaping the digital coverage team into a cohesive unit that creates distinctive original digital reporting, storytelling and analysis, in concert with the best of NBC News on TV.
The new section will be re-imagined from top to bottom so along with unparalleled editorial chops, the best candidates will bring a strong product sensibility and a track record of partnering with the product development side of the house.
Beyond all of that, candidates must bring a wealth of experience covering a variety of wellness (fitness, personal finance, health, career, parenting, etc.) topics, as well as significant time spent as an editorial leader in a digital publishing environment. A familiarity with digital video – how to make it and make it well – is an absolute must, and hands on experience with video is a real plus. The person who wins this job will also know when a story is best told in video, or when it should be text, or when it should be neither and be left to a chart or graphic. They will know, and love, how to use data and metrics to drive editorial and product decisions.
The role will report to NBC News’ Executive Editor, Features and TODAY.com.
+ Setting the daily and overall editorial agenda for our digital wellness coverage, including assigning stories and working with the video and graphics desks to shape their output
+ Working with a range of journalistic talent from both digital and TV to produce journalism that sets us apart
+ Editing stories and being the “last pair of eyes” to see everything that appears on our platforms, or empowering the right people to be that set of eyes in your stead
+ Recruiting and retaining a rock star group of journalists
+ Building and managing a network of freelancers and contributors to supplement in-house talent
+ Establishing best practices for the team, including story selection, headline and deck writing, edit standards – all the while helping the team to break free of tried and true journalistic conventions whose time has come
+ Closely coordinate with colleagues in the larger NBC News newsgathering and coverage teams to align reporting and maximize both depth and breadth of coverage
+ Cultivate a social media presence and general audience awareness of the site to drive traffic and audience loyalty
+ Use metrics and audience data to optimize content and consumption (e.g. topics for SEO, headline writing, choice of topics, etc.)
+ Work closely with Ad Sales to understand our clients’ objectives, and put that understanding to work when developing new content
+ Build relationships with content partners, within and outside of NBC News
+ 8+ years of experience in journalism, with a heavy focus on wellness (inclusive of health, fitness, personal finance, parenting, career) for at least half of that
+ At least 4 or the 8 years working in an exclusively digital journalism shop
+ 2+ years in an editorial leadership capacity, ideally within a commercial environment
+ Experience as an innovator who brings storytelling ideas that breakaway from traditional articles and videos coupled with creative distribution tactics to reach new audiences via social, mobile and desktop
+ Deep understanding of the nuances of packaging for the web, mobile web and social - primarily Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and leading social messaging apps
+ Experience producing creative and high quality video, ideally has worked within or around a TV news organization
+ Deep understanding of the changing digital media landscape in all its forms
+ Experience in managing a budget
+ Must be willing and able to work flexible hours, under tight deadline pressure, including breaking newsAdditional Job Requirements
+ Interested candidate must submit a resume/CV through www.nbcunicareers.com to be considered
+ Must be willing to work in New York
+ Demonstrated ability in serving as a ‘player/coach’ with the team
+ Passionate and curious about “what’s next” in digital and proactively pushes the organization to anticipate and meet news digital consumers’ needs
+ Ability to act like a site owner, having big thoughts and the courage to voice them as well as an inclination towards “Yes,” but knowledge that sometimes saying “No” is the right answer
+ Leadership qualities are key, as is the ability – preferably from experience doing it – to successfully navigate a large and oftentimes complicated organization
+ A sense of humor or at least the recognition of one.
