NBC News Digital is seeking an editor to drive our coverage of politics. The Politics Editor will be responsible for delivering impactful, engaging, discussible and shareable content for a newly-constituted section on NBCNews.com. This person will “own” the section, and as such will be responsible for shaping the digital political team into a cohesive unit that can harness the best of NBC News’ TV coverage and couple it with distinctive original digital reporting and analysis.
The new section will be re-imagined from top to bottom so the best candidates will bring a strong product sensibility and a track record of partnering with the product development side of the house.
Beyond that, candidates must bring a wealth of experience covering US politics and campaigns, as well as significant time spent as an editorial leader in a digital publishing environment. A familiarity with digital video – how to make it and make it well – is an absolute must, while extensive experience with video is a real plus. The person who wins this job will also know when a story is best told in video, or when it should be text, or when it should be neither and be left to a chart or graphic.
Leadership chops are key, as is the ability – preferably from experience doing it – to successfully navigate a large and oftentimes complicated organization.
The role will report to the Executive Editor of NBC News Digital.
+ Setting the daily editorial agenda for our digital politics coverage, including assigning stories and working with the video and graphics desks to shape their output
+ Working with a range of journalistic talent from both digital and TV to produce political journalism that sets us apart
+ Editing stories and being the “last pair of eyes” to see everything that appears on our platforms, or empowering the right people to be that set of eyes in your stead
+ Recruiting and retaining a rock star group of journalists
+ Building and managing a network of freelancers and contributors to supplement in-house talent
+ Establishing best practices for the team, including story selection, headline and deck writing, edit standards – all the while helping the team to break free of tried and true journalistic conventions whose time has come
+ Closely coordinate with colleagues in the larger NBC News newsgathering and political coverage teams to align reporting and maximize both depth and breadth of coverage.
+ Cultivating a social media presence and general audience awareness of the site to drive traffic and audience loyalty
+ Working closely with Ad Sales to create editorial opportunities that generate content, audience and revenue opportunities
+ Cultivating editorial relationships with content partners, within and outside the NBC News
+ Managing rights of licensed content and ensure published content meets rights and contractual agreements
+ 8 years experience in journalism, with a heavy focus on political coverage for at least half of that. At least 4 years working in digital journalism.
+ 2 years in an editorial leadership capacity, ideally within a commercial environment.
+ Exceptional leadership skills and able to act as ‘player/coach’ with the team. A collaborator who can work easily across a large organization.
+ Experience producing creative and innovative quality video. Ideally has worked within or around a TV news organization.
+ Be able to manage a budget and represent the needs of the team internally.
+ Proven ability to partner with product, technology and sales to deliver compelling and competitive digital productsAdditional Job Requirements
+ Interested candidate must submit a resume/CV through www.nbcunicareers.com to be considered
+ Must be willing to work in New York City.
+ Willingness to travel and work overtime, and on weekends with short notice
+ Must be “on call” 24 hours a day / 7 days a week
+ Must be able to provide a reel/portfolio of work examples -- if available, include a web address when you submit your resume
+ An innovator who brings storytelling ideas that breakaway from traditional articles and videos coupled with creative distribution tactics to reach new audiences via social, mobile and desktop. Deep understanding of the nuances of packaging for the web, mobile web and social - primarily Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and leading social messaging apps.
+ Deep understanding of the changing digital media landscape in all its forms. Passionate and curious about “what’s next” in digital and proactively pushes the organization to anticipate and meet news digital consumers needs.
+ Behave like a site owner.
+ Have big thoughts and the courage to voice them.
+ An inclination towards “Yes,” but knowledge that sometimes saying “No” is the right answer.
+ Have a sense of humor or least be able to recognize one.
