Director of Technology/Operations KMOV
I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.
Manages all technical aspects of a broadcast station. Ensures that the station operates efficiently and in compliance with all federal, state and local agencies. Supervises all maintenance and operational staff in the department. Oversees physical plant operations and improvements including all electronic television equipment, related computer systems and building related issues. Develops and manages the station’s capital spending plan. Researches and recommends new equipment and technologies to improve the station’s product and/or increase productivity. Develops and manages the department’s operational budget.
II. Essential Job Functions
Weight % Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results
20% Manages personnel, in compliance with applicable bargaining unit agreement, and equipment of the technical department and other station areas.
20% Manages the daily operations of the studio and transmitter facilities including modernization, new construction, safety, and security.
20% Communicates with staff and other departments within the station. Participates in staff meetings and ensures information is exchanged and disseminated between staff and other departments.
10% Prepares and manages technical department budget. Ensures department spending is within budget.
10% Prepares and oversees capital project management activities related to plant improvements, new construction and news/production assignments. Ensures completion by estimated time line and brings project in or under budget.
5% Maintains the physical plant (studio/transmitter) to acceptable levels of operational requirements by OSHA, FCC, federal, state and local agencies. Performs hands-on technical equipment maintenance.
10% Oversees IT systems and their integration with broadcast equipment. Acts as primary contact with Meredith IT.
5% Administers the engineering portion of the Strategic and Business Resumption plans in compliance with corporate policies.
III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.
College or trade school degree/diploma in electronics or broadcasting or equivalent technical training and experience.
Previous employment in the capacity of Chief Engineer, or a minimum of 5 years as an Assistant Chief Engineer, in broadcasting, production, IT or institutional organization is preferred. Experience at a major news operation is highly desirable.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Possession of an FCC General Radiotelephone License or equivalent certification in broadcast engineering preferred.
Demonstrated experience in working with news and sales departments to maximize engineering’s contribution to the station.
Demonstrated experience in organizing and motivating personnel.
General knowledge of all engineering fields including electrical, electronics, mechanical and civil engineering with a thorough understanding of electronics and broadcast engineering management.
General knowledge of IT systems and their integration with broadcast equipment.
Thorough understanding of FCC rules and regulations.
Ability to provide leadership of the technical staff to maintain and update a broadcast quality television station.
Ability to operate the station within allotted budget. Must possess ability to design and implement changes to meet current and future plant needs.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Must be knowledgeable about unions and general labor relations practices.
Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
Ability to identify how technology can reduce operating costs and provide new business opportunities.
