Job Description

WTAE-TV, the Hearst-owned ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, PA is seeking a digital journalist to lead the growth of its mobile, social and web platforms. The Digital Media Manager serves as a member of WTAE’s news management team and contributes content across multiple platforms, in addition to fostering participation from all members of staff. The ideal candidate has a good eye for compelling content and an authentic voice for storytelling, as well as a strong work ethic and a desire to win. Any candidate must have at least three years of management experience in a multi-platform media company.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads a small team of talented and experienced digital journalists; provides feedback and coaching to members of staff to improve performance.
  • Manages and contributes to online content creation, including but not limited to selecting and writing articles, clipping and/or producing videos, creating quizzes, graphics and slideshows for all digital platforms.
  • Uses social trends and analytics to develop, guide and execute strategies to meet digital goals.
  • Works to grow social media audience for station-branded social expressions by developing an active social posting strategy that includes the entire staff.
  • Works with individual talent to implement best practices on social content creation and engagement in order to grow the individual’s following.
  • Develops content strategies for emerging social networks.
  • Creatively develops unique video and graphical content that complements the news of the day in a meaningful and engaging way.
  • Works to train members of news team to create content for digital consumption.
  • Works to develop content during breaking news with an eye toward owning big coverage, while identifying sidebar angles that perform well on digital/social.
  • Assembles strategic plans for big event coverage that helps WTAE stand out from the competition.
  • Brings consistent sense of urgency, immediacy and real-time strategies to digital news content.
  • Takes an active role in daily editorial planning, assigning tasks to all members of the newsroom and helping to foster a culture of contribution.
  • Serves as primary link between on-air and online news as a key member of the news management team; works closely with News Director, General Manager, marketing director and Hearst TV corporate leadership.

Required Experience

  • Worked in a TV newsroom in a digital leadership capacity, or…
  • Worked for a digital-first media company authoring article content, video clips or in a curation role, or…
  • Worked at an advertising agency managing campaigns for clients, including writing copy and developing social media strategies, or…
  • Built a sizable following for a personal website or blog, with appropriate metrics and examples of your work to show.

Education:

  • College degree in the liberal arts is preferred
  • Equivalent experience in the real world works too
